First introduced in the 1890s Detroit Globe has smooth skinned roots that are a bright purple-red once cooked. It won’t give you a uniform crop but never mind, the flavour is what you are really after.   It is a perfect choice for autumn beets and it stores well, harvest young in the summer for sweet salad beets.  The short leafy top growth can also make a tasty crop.  Price for 50 seeds.

SOW your beetroot seeds 10-20mm deep.  Use cloches to warm the soil for early sowings (that is during February to April or a little later in colder areas).  Once your soil has started to warm (from April in milder areas) you can sow without protection.  Sow seed every 4-6 weeks for a continuous supply of beets
