JANUARY SOWING GUIDE

The best place for starting seeds at this time of the year, even in mild areas, is on a window sill unless you have a heated greenhouse.  Take care not to chill seedlings at night (a window sill behind a closed curtain can be much colder than the room) or to have them too wet. 

  • Baby Leaves
  • Beetroot: Bolthardy, Detroit  Globe & Detroit White & Jannis
  • Broad Beans
  • Cabbage: Brunswick and Verbote
  • Cauliflower: Snow Crown
  • Celery: Red Soup
  • Chillies: hot ones such as Birds Eye do best with an early protected, warm sowing
  • Cress: all varieties and types
  • Endives
  • Kale Scarlet
  • Leaf Beet Erbette
  • Leek: Below Zero & Warwick
  • Lettuce: May Queen, Rouge de Hiver & Till
  • Onion: Dulce De Fuentes,  Globo & Roja de Zalla amongst others
  • Orach
  • Tokyo Bekana
  • Parsley : in variety
  • Peas (first early ones)
  • Radish: Cherry Belle, Malaga Violet & Tarzan F1
  • Rockets in variety
  • Carnation, Eryngium, Hollyhock, Stocks & Sweet Peas
  • Coriander (indoors only), also Lemon Grass
